Puffa Coats are back, but this time round, you’ll not look like the Michelin Man

20130124-200312.jpg

20130124-200303.jpgOk, we’ve covered jackets many times here on SINGLETONMEETSHORSLEY, but quite frankly, they couldn’t be more needed at a better time. Look at it out there. Snow, ice and harsh winds, it’s enough to shut down the whole of the UK. I sure do respect our cousins over the pond who just get on with it and not panic over an inch of the white stuff.

Remember when you were in year five (fifth grade to our yank friends) and your mum persisted in you wrapping up warm. Bobble beanie hat, gloves, scarf and of course, the three sizes too big puffa, handed down from your brother. Damn it was warm, but hell, did you look like the famous tyre mascot in question.

Well, a few years on and we say invest. Perhaps not in one thats not your size nor your colour, but certainly one of these fine examples shown here. Longer in length, slimmer in the cut and by far more practical, these will keep the comparisons and jokes far from you.

If monies no object, have a look at Nigel Cabourn. All of their products are hand made in Yorkshire, England, sourced and produced with the very finest materials available. The Orange Everest Parka (shown above) has a Coyote fur inside, 100% goose feather down insulation, even wooden pull toggles on the cord. Replicated on Edmund Hillary’s actual parka he wore on his adventure, conquering Mount Everest, this is the finest parka available to the everyday man and certainly is an investment piece. We sure like this short puffa too, below.

For more money conscious readers, we’d consider this example on Coggles, by Ben Sherman (below). Part of the every growing, increasingly popular Plectrum label this is by far one of the most reasonable and aesthetically pleasing puffa’s to hand.

So, its down to, how much do you want to pay? We’ll let you decide. We know you’ll get it right.

Learn from the best. Fashionable basics – American Apparel

w-American-Apparel-1008

So now that I have your attention. Great picture don’t you think ? But no this is not the start of a discussion on woman’s fashion, I mean I’m male, what the bloody hell would I know in regards to woman’s fashion. This, or should I say that is to get you thinking about a brand that we really don’t give enough credit to.
To all the UK readers you probably don’t really have much of an idea of the brand in question, however if you’re from the US of A you more than likely know and respect American Apparel, after all it did start out life in your neck of the woods.

The images you see above show you just an insight into what American Apparel have to offer, a simple dress sense that then leaves you able to put your own style into it just by the way you wear it. Come on what more can you want. Best known for making basic, solid-color cotton knitwear American Apparel leave it completely down to you, whilst at the same time presenting you with exceptional quality, prices to smile about and enough of a range to give you a whole evening’s worth of basket filling…if you know what I mean.

Adidas Originals – Every step of the way, their pounding the pavements with style

20130105-190726.jpg

Everyone has owned a pair of adidas trainers. Whether it was perhaps when you invested in a pair of ZX700’s for that marathon you did, a pair of Samba’s for the work 5-a-side team or those Gazelle’s for every saturday down on the soccer terraces, Adidas has embraced every style and perhaps every potential customer. With that in mind, they can cater to everyones taste and always makesure they find a function for the wearers feet.

20130105-190134.jpg
In the 80’s you would have been a fool to have not worn a pair of Superstars like Hip-Hop idols RUN DMC and Public Enemy. You would have probably got beaten up by the football casuals if you weren’t wearing a pair of Munchen’s in the right colour. The point being, they’ve found their place in society, they have meaning and are supported by the masses.

20130105-190052.jpg

You know the history of “The Brand With The 3 Stripes”. It was started by Adi Dassler, the brother of Rudi (the creator of Puma) back in the 1920’s. The intense rivalry was in full flow, each trying to secure the best sponsorship deals, each being adopted by famous clientele. It was a case of you either wore one or the other.

imageimage
20130105-190419.jpg
Nowadays, its much of a fad being loyal to one brand, and Adidas has recognised that too. They’ve collaborated with music icons and labels such as: Ian Brown and Def Jam, fashion designers like: Jeremy Scott and Stella McCartney, all of which create a unique blend of sportswear and fashion. So now couldn’t be a better time to invest in those favourite sneakers you’ve been after. Go on, remember those battered pair of Campuses’ you had and regretfully chucked? With more and more classic, archive designs being rereleased, maybe it’s time to be reunited with an old friend.

CHRISTMAS JUMPERS – The “Do’s & Don’t Do’s” Tips Guide

YMC SWEATPenfield Knit

So, the big days almost here. The friends and family are knocking on your front door one after another, all bearing gifts in hand (including Uncle Jim bringing his embarrassing flatulence with him) and you think to yourself, “That better not be another hand knitted jumper with Rudolph on it, Gran”.

Ok, Christmas jumpers are having some what of a revival at the minute, but look at whats going around, its embarrassing. People are just wearing them for a joke. Don’t whatever you do give in and follow these “sheep” and the atrocious wool their made from. Look back at your family photo albums from the 70’s to the 90’s. Your dad was more than likely wearing one, your Aunt was wearing one, probably you did to. The difference being, that back then, they weren’t “for a laugh”, they were a style choice. Granted, some of them looked distastrous, but did you say anything about it back then, I think not.

Moncler Roll NeckHowlin' Knit

I love a retro, vintage jumper, don’t get me wrong. A 70’s “Chemise Lacoste” lambswool sweater with penguins on it, takes a huge place as my one of favourite tops. You could probably throw my “Polo Ralph Lauren Teddy Bear” sweater in there too. See, these are “true knitted jumpers”. The quality second to none, the style pitch perfect. So I would suggest this Christmas and I suppose every festive season:

– Buy “True Vintage Sweats” (I picked up my examples mentioned for less the £20, a pittance compared to new examples, even the horrendous comical copies, check your charity shops, auctions sites etc. for bargains).

– Avoid obvious christmas designs – Rudolph and Santa can jingle off back home. The point being, you could wear a quality knit from October to February and not for one month.

– And, remember, you get what you pay for. 3 jumpers for £30? A bargain you may say. Tell me that in ten years time when I’m still wearing mine.

Finally, We wish a Very Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year to all our readers. We leave you with a few examples to gaze on and hopefully inspire you this festive season.

Deep within the Trench and I’m not talking about a World War!

Such an iconic item started out life far far back, when was it again ? Oh yeah 1901 when a design was submitted for an army officer’s raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office. Since that day we’ve never looked back!

If your looking at an evening out, maybe an expensive dinner, date night, or even fancy drinks with your friends a Trench is not something you should consider, it’s something you should own. Trench coats have serious style, they can be found all over and there’s plenty of different brands, highstreet and designers, but the one to know has got to be Burberry – Iconic British Luxury Brand Est, 1856. These guys have the word Trench in their blood, plenty of colours and styles to choose from, the prices can vary slightly but don’t let that put you off, you get some serious quality off them. Check their site for all the clarification  you need!

YMC – You Must Create “Everyday style for a distinctive look”

Ymc sweat

Casual wear is usually monotonous and repetitive, certainly when worn on a daily basis and it can often be a struggle to keep it fresh. This is were YMC come in. They take everyday basics and make them into stunning “one offs“, which if anything, are too good for just being that.

YMC POLKA

With the quality as you’d expect, these finely made, beautifully designed garments will not come cheap. A simple lambswool knit can cost anything up to £180 and you’d be hard done by to get much change from £135 for a button down shirt. Well, we at SINGLETONMEETSHORSLEY say, “bite the bullet”.

YMC PAISLEY

“But, I can buy almost 6 shirts for the price of that one, Jack!” I hear you say. Yes, you probably can in fairness, but will any of those create such an image that these will? Will they last half, if not ten times longer that these will? I think not. So, I’ll let the pictures do the talking. Hell, they did for me last week, I bought one of these sweats!

YMC SWEAT

Be sure to check out YMC at “Coggles” who stock the examples above.

Paisley has got to be by far one of my coolest prints and in my eyes it’ll just never grow old, so there’s no surprise that this is my favourite piece I’ve seen yet. CLARKS “ORIGINALS” DESERT BOOTS – These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do..

That’s right, desert boots are as old as your grandparents. Amazingly they’ve been around since 1949 and never cease to exist. Every generation has appreciated the quality and effortless style of Clarks since that very year. From the Eighth Army serving in Cairo back in World War Two, to the Mods of the highly influential 60’s and todays recent “Fashion Conscious”, they’ve undeniably cemented themselves as essentials for the modern man.

The heritage attached to the brand hasn’t been effected by the current economic climate of recent, in the fact that everything is still sourced from authentic, traditional and family run suppliers. With the leather gathered from as far a field as the USA, and the humble setting of North England for the suede, you’ll know that all of the boots have been crafted with only the best materials and not by cheaper imitations of the far east.

We at SINGLETONMEETSHORSLEY love the simplistic value these boots add to everyday living. There is nothing you can’t wear with them and the silhouette creates a smart finish to any outfit. Might we suggest, you invest in a suede pair (the material not only looks better, but is easier to maintain). Team these with skinny jeans, (roll ups, would be a rather good bet) and you’ve got yourself a winning combo, sir.

All boot images and info gathered courtesy of Clarks.
